Interior Doors

Aaaaagh!!!
Completing on my first place (a flat) next week. The current owner painted all the internal doors, including tops and bottoms so they don't shut, plus with an awful finish.
Anyway, in my move budget, I'd allowed around £200 for new doors (luckily I have a friend who can hang them), based on Wickes/B&Q prices for cheap internal doors. Went to them today though, and discovered my doors sizes aren't a standard one they stock.
I'm looking for five of 80.25"x28.5" (one glazed, four non), and one 80.25"x24.5". To my relief I've been looking online and a couple of places do these sizes, so at least I don't need made to measure.
However, best site I've found so far is:
http://www.doorwarehouse.co.uk/index.php
Has anyone dealt with and can recommend?
Plus, even basic plain pine I'm looking at around £560 in total, inc delivery.
Anyone know any cheap door suppliers, ideally trade prices but will sell to the public? (long shot I know...)
Have thought of reclamation yards but since it's all the doors and I want them to match I may struggle.....

Maybe, before you go spending loads of money, a bit of careful paint removal from the bit of the doorframe above the top of the door might help.
Would your friend who can hang the doors for you be willing to help you take them off so that you can strip the paint from the top of them? Seems a shame to send your doors to landfill just because of a bit of old paint.
Or, you could look into getting your doors dipped - it's a v.efficient way to get rid of all the old paint. Just look in yellow pages, yell.com or your local paper and phone round for quotes. You'll end up with lovely wooden doors which you might decide to varnish and show off the wood rather than hide it with paint.
Best of luck in your new pad, it's great having your own home!0 -
I too would recommend dipping, if your doors are not horridly designed. Our friends dipped, and the results weren't half bad, though they looked fairly distressed, but they were pleased, and I thought htey looked pretty good.
The other reason to do this, is they already have door furniture on. So you don't have to drill, file, sand etc. just replace, put back what you took off.
Screwfix, though, if you really want to get new doors, are pretty good. They offer next day delivery, and it's free if you spend more than £50.
They really do deliver next day as well. When we built our extension, we laughed because screwfix delivered next day, and Travis Perkins, only 10 miles away, couldn't manage next week!I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
where do you live?
i got my doors from a local supplier and they were only £35 each.0 -
I live near Chelmsford, Essex if that helps....
I'm renting a flat the same as the one I'm buying, so I know what the doors were like pre-painting. They're the original ones the builder's put in, plain wooden ones - alright but not sure how they'd look with the paint removed. Might experiment on a small corner....Same friend who can hang reckons he could strip them back for re-painting which is another option.
I thought about getting the paint off the top, but the finish he got on them when painting was horrible, and will really wind me up. Originally they've got a varnish-esque finish and he just painted over this so they look pretty naff.
Going through the post-move budget today to see if it'll leave me too tight to spend more than planned...0 -
Ooh and thanks for the Screwfix tip - saw them yesterday but they don't seem to do any in my size... (2040 x 726 mm)0

Check to see wether you have a Howdens nearby.
They say trade only but I've used them before.
Allot of the doors in my house are 'non standard' compared to the likes of B&Q, however they had lots of different sizes.

They have a website - https://www.kaybeedoors.co.uk

if the doors are ply wood then replace if they are old fashioned hard wood pannel doors then dip and strip. If your not happy with the effect afterwards then old fashioned solid doors go for a packet ( b&q sell cheap pine wood doors for under £20 each but they are prone to swelling)Money's too tight to mention!!!0
