Used Car Discounts at National Dealers

Hi everyone!

I am planning to buy a used car about 3-5 year old with 60-70k on the clock. I am planning to spend about 3-3.5k. I want to buy from the likes of Evans Halshaw, Anthony Betts, etc.

I want to know if anyone out there knows if there is a standard discount going around with these national dealers?

I was told that in good times a discount of £250 or so was normal. How about now?

Thanks to all who reply to this post.

Probably less likely to get a discount, as one of their big earners is selling finance. However that might all have changed now in this climate.

Do your research on the car you want and then you can figure out what is a good deal or not. I imagine you are looking to buy from a big group for added security if anything goes wrong so they will be charging a premium.

A few months ago I was at a Evans Halshaw branch, where sales manager explained that their overheads were so high, they could not offer much in way of P/X against pre-reg car. So if they have to heat/light/rent/pay rates on a 2 storey high, understocked and totally unnecessary showroom, don't expect big discounts.

A Pre Reg is normally sold on at what it cost the dealership in the first place. It makes it money by helping them hit a new car target and is then sold on near to cost. You will probably have more luck looking at a used car than a pre reg. If you can find out how long they have had the car. Most larger groups operate a 90 day stock policy. If they have not sold a car after this time they will pack it off to an auction so are more willing to offer a deal rather than take a loss. You do have to consider in some cases why hasn't the car sold though??

Have stood in far too many auction halls recently, where the BIG fleets have a rep on hand to make the decision to 'let it go' at just about ANY sensible bid!!

They've been cashing in big time, over last couple of months, so there HAVE been 'bargains' out there.

Whether they get passed on as customer savings, on the forecourt, is a different matter!!
