MP3 other than iPod

Hi
I've just had a new in-car cd player fitted, and it includes a cable to plug in to an iPod, which I don't have as yet.
Looking around, it seems that iPods are comparatively expensive compared to other MP3 players. Are there any other MP3 players that use the same connectors as the iPod, or are there adaptors available?
Thanks

I very much doubt it. And if there were, it would probably bring it up to the price of an ipod anyway!
Personally i'd buy an ipod second hand if i didn't want to spend the money on a new one, just to maintain compatibility.0 -
Iriver's are good quality, but the price is on the rise for some reason. The H10 models were around £120 before Christmas, now at £160.0

I don't have an ipod so I can't check the connection directly but I bought a cassette adaptor on ebay which was advertised as suitable for ipods - I have a Creative Zen Micro and it works perfectly with this.
This adaptor goes into the cassette player at one end and plugs into my mp3 player at the headphone socket.
I'm thinking that it could well be that you have a generic socket on the cd player and as ipods (I think) use the same type of headphone or output socket as any other mp3 player out there (or portable cassette or cd players for that matter).
I think the information you have that it is an ipod cable only reflects the fact that ipods are the best known players on the market in the same way that people call vacuum cleaners "hoovers" or portable cassette players "walkmans" (as in Sony walkman).
If I'm wrong perhaps someone who has an ipod might be able to explain the difference or just confirm that this is accurate info.0 -
If you CAN afford it, buy and Ipod Mini or Nano - 4gb one for about £138 or so. They are fantastic! I dabbled with other mp3's but you simply cant beat the ipods - they even feel nice to hold!
I have a 20gb 3rd gen one I got cheap of ebay...brill!!0 -
I wouldn't recommend a second-hand ipod. Ipods are notoriously bad for breaking - just have a look on ebay for "faulty ipod". In fact, I wouldn't recommend ipods at all, style over substance, there are many, many better mp3 players out there. Creative and Archos are very highly regarded by a lot of people. Having owned several Creative, Archos and ipods, I'd definitely recommend Archos as my favourite0

Ipod chargers fit the Creative Zen so I would assume the cd cable will as well0

... according to the Goodmans website the cable "Recharges/ powers personal jukebox ", hence I suspect the cable plug into the power connector... I'll maybe borrow a few MP3 Players and see what fits :-)0
