Caught Speeding In Germany?

Hi

I think I may have been caught by speed camera during the early hours of Monday morning(15th Dec) on a German Autobahn.

I stuck to all speed limits religiously whilst I was there, or so I thought but as I was overtaking a van at the end of a two lane motorway as it filtered into one lane before turning sharp bend and joining another autobahn there was a red flash. The flash did not come from my side but the opposite carraigeway and I was aware of the flash in front of me rather than behind me.If I have worked this out correctly, if it was on the opposite carraigeway then the camera would have been facing the oncomimg traffic. This being the case it flashed as I approached it indicating that a vehicle opposite had triggered the camera.I can hope but I need to expect the worse.

That said does anyone know what I can expect ie fine, will the politzie persue me. If I was speeding I think it was only just over as I was already slowing down for the end of the filter lane.

Do they have the right to give penalty points onto my UK licence.

Any thoughts would be appreaciated.

Most German speed cameras face towards the front of an approaching car, so that the driver appears in the picture. If it had gone off in your face, it wouldn't leave room for doubt.

I think you'd be unlikely to hear about it. In theory drivers can be pursued across boundaries, but though there are proposals for pan-European endorsements I don't believe that's been enacted yet.

I was stopped and fined in 1992, but on a couple of cameras since, nothing has happened. Maybe doing 75 kph at 1 am in a 70 limit isn't worth the postage

Not going to be much help but had the same thing happen to me on the 5th December, well mine was in town, approaching an airport, blinding red light flash, pretty sure it was a speed camera. Obviously not heard anything yet either, hire car, foreign driver, could take a while to get through, will post if/when I hear anything.
  • I have just spent 12 days in Germany. Did,nt see many cameras but all those I saw faced the oncoming vehicle, hence I think it may have been the driver on the opposite carraigeway that got caught and not me.Guess I will need to keep fingers crossed.

I only spent 24 hours there for the football, I was tired but the flash seemed to come from both sides, it was 2a.m. and not another car in sight so definately me they got, fingers crossed too, for both of us !!
  • I,m sure the red flash woke you for a short period. Good luck to you too

Cheers, just found THIS I dont speak much German but section 1 seems to be fines for in town and 2 for out of town autobahns etc. No points until 20kph over limit, dont think they can add them to a UK licence but not 100% sure.
  • We had a speed camera go off on us in June in Germany in a town. Never heard anything from it so might have been lucky or maybe they don't pursue it with hire cars.

I got one 2 years ago and the fine appeared in the post at home (in Switzerland).
No points system though, so the worse that could happen was you having to pay a fine.

Germany cannot put points on a UK licence.

However, it's worth noting that Germany *will* create a ghost licence (similar to what Ireland does) for a driver - so if you rack up enough points there, you can find yourself banned. A ban (in theory) in Germany would be enough for the DVLA to revoke your driving licence as a result - so be very careful with racking up too many fines.

It's also possible that if they get your details (the DVLA like selling details!) and you don't pay the fine, you'll be on record in Germany as having an outstanding fine. I don't know the details of what computer systems they have at their borders - but it's quite possible that a swipe of the passport will reveal unpaid fines.

Of course, if it was your own car - I wouldn't worry, just don't go back there with the same plates ;)
