Credit Card Fraud

in Credit cards
HI ,,,the other week i booked a hotel on line using my mastercard.I had no conformation in e.mail so i was suspicious about that. And i have since realised that the hotel i booked for one night just takes a deposit (4.50 euro) and you pay when you leave. The next day i went into a computer store to buy something and i used the same card to purchase goods the card was declined. When i got in i had a message from my banks fraud department to ask me if i had been purchasing items , ie, mobiles, goods on line ect , to which i said NO..they told me my card had been cloned,,,A week later i received my statement only to find that the cheeky F*****s had booked and paid for 1 holiday in the excess of 1,200.00 plus paying there phone bill. When i rang the fraud department they said it was ok they will reimburse me,, i began to tell them were i thought it had been cloned but they werent intrested really.Just said i will get my money back, they didnt even cross examine me , just said they will re pay me!!!
Do the banks just write it off or do they actually track these fraudsters down as i think 1,500.00 is a bloomin cheek to take off someone elses card when it isnt theres..??????i am intrested in any replies ,,thank you

Why don't you ask your card issuer to give you their crime reference number. If they haven't got one, take 5 minutes to go down to your local nick and get a crime number for them.
"From Hansard Earlier This Year"
However, Bedfordshire police tell me that of the 745 debit and credit cards that were cloned, they did not have one single referral back from a bank or a credit card company.0 -
so what will that acheive??????sorry to be a thicko0

The police will not take the crime report from the card holder as they are not the victim (Home Office rules), the card issuer is. Some issuers bulk report, most simply write off the amount as bad & doubtful debt / fraud losses. In reality the retailer at the other end of the chain will often lose the money so the bank don't always lose out.
If the retailer can withstand the chargeback as they can prove they thought it was the ligitimate customer then the loss falls with the card issuer. To be fair as a lot of CC fraud is carried out abroad, and it sometimes is impossible to work out how the card details were released into the 'wild' then the police have very little chance of catching those responsible. People do get caugt, it just does not make headline news. These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!
I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!0 -
Well its not that easy to get a refund for a fraud on the card, the process will take some and its the responsibility of the fraud department to detect the fraud that has taken on your card. All you have to do is to be in contact with the fraud department and keep a track of the calls you have made to them. As soon as they realize that someone else has used your card, you would be eligible for the refund.
All the best.........0 -

Good question. This achieves several things.
Frist it's power to your elbow if the transaction is disputed (ie your card issuer blames you), then I'm sure they'll take YOU more seriously if it's you that has reported it.
By making sure it's reported locally it helps indicate if this type of crime is prolific in your area. It may even hightlight a location that card details are being pinched or chip and pin machines or atm's being tampered with. This just may allow early intervention by the local plods and prevent it happening to others. Who knows it may even result in a fraudster being caught.0 -
