Best (free?) options for attracting tenants

Letting agents around here are asking £500+ to find and vet potential new tenants, which I think is a little steep.
So I've advertised on work notice boards, Gumtree, Houseladder, Let-a-Life, Let-a-Property and Friday-Ad websites.
Was going to place adverts in the local paper in the new year, but are there any other more cost-effective avenues that I'm missing?
Thanks

I suspect the "best (free) option" might well be the most costly option.
Is the free way the quickest way! Consider the void. Why not instruct a LA and try privately, if the LA found a suitable tenant first you will get the income quicker.

Ask the council if they'll put a tenant in it for you?0

I have only ever advertised in local the Post Office and Newsagents. Now, I have people asking me if my house will be available soon. Sadly, I only have one and the tenats seem to be more than happy to stay.
A good LL who deals fairly with their tenants should be able to find new tenants by word of mouth. I could charge more I suppose and pay a LA to find me a tenant but I don't see the point.

Board outside with "to let ring XXX" is also fairly cheap.0

i had my letting agent today ring me to see if i wanted them to ring my tenent to see if he wants to extend there tenancy when it runs out in feb.I thought it was a good idea because it lets me know in advance of his intentions,,also my letting agent will advertise it for re letting earlier than usuall due to the current property letting climate..good idea i thought.0
