Just bought a new computer which should come with a 500gb hd but when installing windows Xp, it came up as 235gb. I know this means it is probably a 250gb hd as you do lose some space.
The info that came with it though, states that using the wrong operating system can stop the real size being detected, is this true or have I been scammed?

XP should be able to see a 500gb drive fine
It might be it has some type of RAID - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID and half the space is taken up by that?
Or maybe it has 2 discs in it 2x250 and one is faulty
Try phoning them up? where did you get it from? link?0 -
I too have had the exact same problem with several XP computers. Download SWISKNIFE...........http://www.download.com/CompuApps-SwissKnife-V3/3000-2248_4-10070864.html...........(Im at work and for some reason the LINK has failed so just copy and paste into your browser)It wil allow you to create another partition to make up the whole drive:idea:0

I have just opened it up and it is a 250gb

Will have to get back onto the Ebay seller I bought it from and see if he will upgrade it as he was supposed to do originally.Stopped smoking Jan 2007 after 23 years!Cigarettes NOT smoked = 240,945Smoke free days = 11 Years :TCash saved so far = £125,45,110 -
The best way to tell the correct size of the drive is to connect the drive to your system.
Now go into Control Panel and select Administrative tools.
Next select Computer Management.
When this window pops up select Disk Management from the left hand side menu under the storage tree.
In here you should be able to see the new drive and which partitions it has set. You can delete which ever partitions there are and partition it to one large 500GB drive and then format it ready for use.:: No Links in signatures please - Edited by Forum Manager ::0 -
