at the CEX near me if you dont get there at opening time you're very unlikely to get cash - most days there is a queue of people waiting for them to open.

If I want to trade in a game or bluray I look up the CEX price online then take them to gamestation - they match the price and put £1 on top of any of the prices that are higher than their own cash/trade prices cos I got sick of queuing up in CEX to be told that there was no cash left.
  • CEX are mostly franchised stores, so one or more being in trouble doesn't necessarily mean the company is in trouble.

the one in sheffield certainly isnt in trouble.. every time i go in there is always mammoth queues for the buying/selling bit

I'm a little confused as to what rights you think you should have.

    You are selling not buying.

If I were to try and sell you something and you said ..

"I'll give you £100, but I don't have the money".... would you expect me to have any sort of recourse under the law to force you to come up with the dosh ?

All you can do is walk away with your phone and try and sell elsewhere.

yes -- ofcourse you would. You would have a verbal contract in place, if you have fulfilled your side, your just left for the other party to fulfil their side ie make payment. If it remains unpaid you would have to take t to the county courts like any other debt and enforce your judgement.

I don't see how this is relevant to CEX. There is no verbal contract in place. They told the OP that they didn't have enough cash to buy his game and then no buying/selling happened.

For an electronic item that they test, they still reserve the right to refuse to buy for any reason. Whether it failed the test, looks dodgy or they just don't like the person etc.

Went into CEX today, wanting to trade in Battlefield 3. On the website, they offered me £36 cash if the discs were in good condition and all the leaflets the game came with were included.
When I said I wanted to trade it in for cash, the guy 'unfortunately' didn't have enough cash to cover the sale. What sort of major corporate chain electronics store doesn't carry enough cash pay £36 for a game they will earn £48 re-selling?

Rant over, also if anybody has any previous experience of similar problems, please let me know :D

How do they earn £48 reselling? The game costs less than that in the shops so why do people pay mroe for a second hand version of the game? Not being funny, just intrigued.

On the cash thing with CEX, I have sold games a few times, they often say they have no cash and to come back later. I think you can post games to their online office and receive a cheque back in the post?

Why give you cash when they can make you wait a bit lomger and take their vouchers.

  • I've had simular problems with them not having enough cash and offering vouchers instead. Accordingly it was my own fault for going in half hour before closing on a Saturday.
I've since been back, but the items had devalued slightly, so did not get original quote.

I've had the 'we don't have enough cash' line, but it worked out for me in reverse - in that I was paying cash for my item (an iphone) and they were desperate for cash - when I asked them for a discount, they said if I paid cash they'd knock some money off.

I asked why just cash, and it seems they didn't have enough cash in the store as people had been selling their goods to the store all day, so they were keen to get cash into the store, and price I paid compared to ebay was roughly the same.

I really don't get CEX and the too little cash problem. I tried to sell Bromley CEX a PS2 a little while back and they couldn't pay cash because they were 'scraping together' enough cash to buy a PS3. But if they could sell these consoles on at a profit, then the people they are really hurting is themselves.
