I have an AMD processor with Windows XP on my computer. On start-up it makes a ding-dong noise, and on shut down it goes through a few notes.
How do I get rid of the start-up/shut-down noise without turning off the speakers?

Go to the Control Panel, open Sound And Audio Devices, click the Sounds tab. You can scroll down and click on anything you want to change, just choose (none) for the ones you want silent

mine does that, but only when my pda is docked, its a USB connecting warning noise. Got anything like that plugged in?

Have managed to get the "sounds" up but when clicking on to the relevant "start-up" or "shut-down" I cannot find where it says "none". Any further advice welcome.0

In the same control panel window, select the sound that you want to switch off e.g. Start Windows, click on the drop down list marked Sounds and select (None). Repeat for any other sounds then Apply and OK0
