Finding out my balance

Options
Hi all, I'm about to go insane.

I've been trying to find out how much I owe on my student loan. My balance on the student loan repayment site is only up to date as of 2007, meaning they haven't received any payment details for 2007-2008.

Based on that figure (albeit out of date), I think I should be student loan free within 6 months max, and I'm going to fall into this trap:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/20000-graduates-overcharged-for-student-loans-873755.html

My HR department told me to phone HMRC, who deny all knowledge of what my debt is and said that the SLC should know how much I owe. Clearly the SLC don't know how much I owe because HMRC haven't told them.

I'm literally blown away by the ineptitute of the people I'm dealing with here, and there sheer crapness of the process in general, does anyone know how I can find out what I owe and how I go about making sure I don't end up overpaying for an extra year?

Well, the best way to get an idea of your balance is to phone SLC (switchboard - 01413062000) with your P60's and your wage slips for this tax year.

You can give them the deductions over the phone and they can work out your balance from there. They can also predict your repayment date and put a stop on your deductions if its within a couple of months of finishing.

So get your P60 for 06/07 and 07/08 and your payslips for April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December (if you have it) and give them a ring.

HMRC wouldn't know your balance because they're only the middlemen. They get your repayments from your employer, keep the money and send notification to SLC. SLC can only give you an up to date balance if they have all your recent repayments.

    Hope this helps.

I think you can also do a balance prediction on the repayment site now as well.

Great, I got my deductions for 2007-2008 and for this year and I calculated a balance of £460 on the SLC repayment thing, so I'll give them a call in February time and get thart done.

    Cheers all.
