LCD TV for use with XBOX 360

Son wants an 26" LCD TV to use with his 360, and has seen a Goodmans set in Comet that he quite likes.
They also do a 32" version for only another £29.00 which sounds more like a bargain.
But they only have a contrast ratio of 600:1.

This seems to be a bit on the low side, but all other specs seem to match what he wants, will this be a major problem with picture quality when gaming.

Sets are GOODMANS LD2667D and GOODMANS LD3265D2.

  • Don't put too much faith in contrast ratios. Manufacturers use them for marketing spin. If the rest of the spec looks suitable and the picture quality looks good, buy it.

Another possible choice is a TOSHIBA 32AV555DB whcih is £349, that is the max budget. This one has a contrast ratio of 18000:1, which would suggest a better picture.

I also suggest to never go on 'specs' alone as they tend to be utter BS, and done really say anything about the ACTUAL quality of the picture
BUT, 600 is VERY low, so I certainly wouldnt recommend that.
Personally id recommend Sony, Panasonic or Samsung

The likes of Sony, Panasonic and Samsung are a bit over budget just to use for a 360, which is why I have been also looking at the Toshiba.

    It's an utterly meaningless number.

The SMPTE 196M Motion-Picture Film - Indoor Theater and Review Room Projection - Screen Luminance and Viewing Conditions document calls for a contrast ratio of 600:1 for doing critical work. This is what is used by the people who edit all the movies you watch.

This $13,000 Sony CRT display used for editing work might be able to display 600:1, but there isn't an LCD or plasma capable of actually doing so.
  • My brother in law bought a goodmans and it didn't last 5 minutes, I would spend a bit more on something better.
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • My sons use the Samsung model recommended by alienrik: - http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=SAMS-LE26A457

We got ours from argos when they were £100 off (sorry not the case at the moment, just checked). £310 is still a good price though.

The TV itself is very good, the xbox is connected through a VGA lead and is a lot brighter than standard connections. The refresh rate is high and colours and contrast are exceptional.

Buy the Samsung, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the info, in the end we have settled on a 32" set made by LG.
It is the 32LG3000 and after cashback, vouchers etc got it for a tad over £330.

Gary, Glad you didn't go for Goodmans. Our 37 inch Goodmans LCD TV stopped working after 2.25 years. Comet couldn't get parts (power supply) so we have had to buy a new one and throw the Goodmans out.
