Getting Single Bank charges back

I was wondering if anyone knew what to say to banks if I was trying to get just one charge back. I have been with RBS since Jan-08, I pay £12 a month for a gold account, and I have my mortagage with RBS. This month for the first time I have gone over my limit and a direct debit has been returned with a charge of £35. I heard somewhere that if it is your first charge with your bank they can be a bit leanient and refund it - I need to phone them and I wondered if anyone knew what to say to them to get them to refund it??

RBS are generally Hardcore on this topic albeit other banks are not.
