Orange Won't Repay Direct Debits!

Options
I swapped to Talk Talk broadband in April from Orange (Wannadoo). I only noticed the direct debit to Orange wasn't cancelled in November, so unknowingly I paid 6 months of £17.99 to Orange when Talk Talk was providing my service (I paid Talk Talk as well, of course).

Talk Talk assure me they notified Orange at the takeover. Orange are claiming I didn't personally request the changeover code, so as far as they are concerned I was still a customer for those six months and I'm liable for the payments.

Am I entitled to my money back?

Thanks anyone for picking this one up.

Did you cancel your Orange contract as laid out in their T&Cs? If not, you were still a customer even though you had 'swapped' to Talk Talk. If you were relying on Talk Talk to cancel the Orange contract for you, you should have checked up after the switch to make sure it had happened. You should also have cancelled the Orange direct debit so they couldn't take any more money.

Normally you would have started the swap by requesting a MAC code from Orange which would also put them on notice that you were cancelling.

you should have cancelled your account with Orange personally once the change was made - never trust someone else to do it
