Little Black Flies?

Hi

Can any of you give me an idea how to sort these pesky little critters out? I have had a problem with these flies all over the house for the past week or so and I have just found where they seem to be coming from - I have a large Yukka and I've just found the earth in the pot is crawling with these little black flies. Whilst I am pleased that I have found where they are coming from, I have no idea how to go about getting rid of them without losing my plant as well.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

I've got them as well, but I got rid of the plants they where in months ago! Little !!!!!!s are still about :( I had them once before ages ago, got rid of the plants but they lived in the rotting window we had at that house! Haven't managed to work out where they are living at the moment through. I would get rid of the plants cause they soon find somewhere else

We had this problem too. In the end I brought some fly/wasp killer spray from B%Q, sprayed all around the house for 5 seconds in each room, then went out for a few hours.

Haven't seen a fly since, apparently you need to repeat weekly to kill off the newly hatched ones, until they're completely gone.

Be careful of pets and eating areas as the spray can be harmful.

Put Derris dust on the surface. I bring plants in at the back end of the summer and treat them with Derris and have not had any insect problems, including vine weevil.

Thank you for your replies. What is Derris dust? Is it something I can buy in most garden centres / hardware stores?

I think you'll find that Derris Dust (which is a white powder which usually comes in a puffer pack) has been or is about to be banned by the EU so it may be disappearing from garden centre shelves.
I've recently had two house plants which have been infected by whitefly, almost to the point of destruction. I sprayed them heavily with a domestic flykiller aerosol in a well ventilated room which seems to have killed them all off, so maybe this would work for your black flies as well.
