For what it is worth, I think a great many people thought that house prices had gone as far as they were going (I thought they topped in Q3 2004), the difference in outlook was HPC 50%-80%
or gentle inflationary reduction (soft landing) over a few years.
The credit crunch was the deciding factor.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

i would say most people knew that it was coming - very few could predict when it would happen.
i'm now going to predict that house prices will rise!! you heard it here first and i'm warning all you HPCers that you're going to miss out!!
what is hilarious is the self-aggrandizing of some people that say that have been warning other people - total tosh.0 -

Haven't read the whole thread. I know there are vultures and people wanting to exploit, it works both ways even as far back as 07 prices were still high and some were in it purely for the money, nice little nest egg
When I sold my last house in Feb 07 I was so glad it went to a young couple who are raising a baby rather than one or two we got that did it for money, mind you they will be kicking themselves now
I buy a house to live in, of course I would like to payless wouldn't' we all.
The odd thing is twice now once in 89 and now in 07 when I got this house we are facing falling house prices. I made some equity in my last house but it took 17 years to do it before we went for our 2nd home. I have no intention of selling up unless I really have to
I am fortunate that my mortgage is low compared to many now but I also on a low income so it takes a large proportion of my income on mortgage payments0 -
I am shocked at the way a lot of you are laughing and rubbing your hands with glee at the house price crashes. Don't you realise that there are a lot of ordinary people who have lost everything? For you to be able to buy a repossession means financial ruin for some other unfortunate person and they have lost everything including their home through the sheer bad luck of trying to buy at the wrong time.
This person no doubt paid more for their house than the knock down price that you will pay so why do you deserve to have it rather than them? You are profiting off the back of other people's misfortune. You are trying to make out that everyone who has bought in the past is full of greed and is trying to price first time buyers out of the market. This is not true. There are many ordinary people who have struggled with mortgages for years.
This all gives me the uncomfortable feeling that there is going to be a hpc bloodbath in the next few months. Don't get me wrong I feel sorry for first time buyers but there seems to be a lot of opportunistic greed on this forum.
i was nearly one of those poor idiots 3 years ago, i found a cheap house in the town next to where i work, it was only the fact that the vendors were idiots that stopped me buying it (long story) as a consequence i stopped thinking of moving and started saving, some idiot paid what i was going to offer for the house and they are trying to sell it at an inflated price- ha, good luck, i know what they paid and its a rip off at that.
i work hard, why cant i have my own house? i dont drink massively or smoke or gamble or anything else that wastes money, especially if prices go to where it is cheaper to buy than rent, the way it should be.
i have no sympathy for middle class btl investors that have used their superior financial situations to make terraced houses and starter homes unaffordable just so they can pay for fancy schools and fancy 4x4s, they can rot in hell for all i carethings arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back thenMercilessKiller wrote: »BH is my best mate too, its ok

Woah.
There are winners and losers in every situation. People who are in a position to take advantage of an economic situation are, depending upon one's point of view, either cynical money-grabbers, profiting at the expense of the poor; or canny investors making the best use of resources. How one views it depends upon which of the many possible situations one finds oneself in. Some years ago I rented out my property. It went badly for me and I lost out big style. But one has to accept that there are winners and losers for every situation that presents.
It ill-becomes you [generic] to hurl insults at each other. Bottom line is we have to look out for ourselves and [within the law] make the best we can of the situation that applies. To criticise people for doing this implies resentment and jealousy.0 -
Where I live in the London suburbs, gas engineers charge £1,000 to fit new boilers, plumbers charge £200 - £250 for a days work. I know a lot of both and I don't know of one who earns less that £70 - 80K a year.
If they were sick for 6 weeks and took 4 weeks leave they would still be on £60K.
I have two well educated, university qualified (and good ones) sons who earn £35K. They may get sick pay but I wouldn't like to bet that therir pension is safe.
That said I know whose wage I would like to earn. And putting money aside these guys are loaded and deserve no sympathy.
Plumbers and gas engineers fit in the same category as estate agents and black cab drivers who similarly are now whinging.
Plumbers are always whinged about more than any other trade. There is a saying about plumbers, the training of a doctor, the wages of a dustman. People go to university I know but how many of these people have to pay big bucks to retrain every few years just to remain qualified? Plumbers have to carry a massive range of tools as the job covers so many areas.
My husband supplied and fitted a good quality Glowworm Combi boiler recently for £800. He made about £100 for the day but it was a very long day from 8am until he returned home at 11pm. Supply teachers earn about that much and most of them sit on their backsides in a classroom starting at 9 and finishing at 3.30pm. I know that because I work in a school. He works bloody hard mostly for dustmen's wages. We are certainly not loaded and never have been.
I fail to see how these London plumbers are making so much when there are so many people coming in from Eastern European countries to undercut them. Or maybe it is the Eastern Europeans who are charging that much.
Why is it that no one ever complains about how much politicians, bankers or lawyers earn often for very little effort just because they spent 3 years at university? There would be a huge outcry if the government brought in Eastern European workers to undercut those jobs. I seem to remember there was something in the news about Polish dentists coming into Britain but it seems that a stop has been put to that. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -

You don't know how true this is. My husband was working for a contractor who stopped paying him. After about 8 weeks he was forced to walk off the site because he had no money and the contractor was very angry that he did that. There was plenty of work but no money. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0
