I'd be angry if I was a low earning single person who gained nothing while middle earning people with children received a bonus. A lot of single people are sick of hearing the phrase 'hard working families' as it seems to imply that people with children work harder than those without children.

There were a lot of comments on the online Australian press stating anger at this perceived discrimination.

A more general handout was given before but people saved it or paid down debt so it didn't have the desired impact.

There was a woman on the radio this afternoon saying that it was discriminatory against Aboriginals that they should be encouraged to reduced debt with the cash rather than buy Christmas presents like everyone else is doing.

don't see the problem with it myself

those children will be paying the pensions of the low earning single person when their retired

i would think of it as a contribution to my pension

I don't really see how that is relevant. Their parents are being given $1000 per child to splurge on presents - I don't see how that makes any difference to the amount of money the child will contribute to pensions when they are older. My point is that single people are just as likely to be feeling the pinch than people with children and should also benefit from any fiscal stimulus.

The problem comes when people spend the money on imports rather than Australian made products.

I do get the point that you give money to the people most likely to spend it if you want a fiscal stimulus - wouldn't stop me from feeling angry though.

the point is it costs a lot of money to bring children up

and those children will pay everyones pensions in the future when their working (and they will be paying a lot more in tax than you ever have or will do to support you)

and yes i agree that of course single people will also be feeling the pinch.....................but there is probably only so much money to go round (they don't have Flash Gordon policies over there) and so they would be looking to help the most hard pressed.......................which would be pensioners and families with children

    why?

families with children are getting money and so are pensioners

    whats wrong with that?

    Positive discrimination.

It's hard to imagine how I could be worse off - british single white straight male in the UK. I guess I'm at the very bottom of the pile.

When you read about the 'tax credits' made available to well off families it's bad enough. Chucking more money at them would really !!!! me off. Then there's the chav baby making factories...

How about no discrimination? If money is being chucked around desperately by the powers that be why not make it the same (reduced) amount for every man woman and child?

Apparently they tried that last time and not enough was spent. This time the funds have been given to people most likely to spend.

Of course if you want to ensure it's almost all spent then target drug addicts and alcoholics. Perhaps too large a proportion of drugs are grown abroad.

They should give it to charities and give them specific instructions on how the money should be spent, ie toys/books for children's wards in hospitals or food to provide the homeless with Christmas meals. If it is just about putting money into the economy then this would work.

They wouldn't though as this is really all about sentiment and confidence and a bid to make people feel as if it isn't that bad.
