Sold Item with buy-it-now - paypal payment is on hold - is this legit?

I sold an item for #85 plus 10 poatage, was purchased on day of listing with buy it now. Buyer's location showed as Malta so was not going to proceed but buyer has now paid with paypal with Huntingdon address. Paypal payment is 'on-hold' which I have never seen before.

Does this sound legit - I don't want to let the buyer down this close to xmas but obviously I also do not want to end up having shipped the item and not received payment.

Any advice gratefully received.

  • Is it the 21 day hold? This is in order to protect the buyer. When they leave +feedback, or 21 days pass, the money can be released.

If this is what's happening, you're meant to despatch straight away.

Yes - this is the deal. Just wondering if people had seen similar with scam purchasers as I have never had this before (although I have only sold 3 or 4 items)

Just make sure the transaction is showing in your pp account, and that you're not just relying on an email (which could be faked) :)

Hiya, I would strongly recommend not to send the item till the funds have been released. Have had the same before on 2 occasions when I sold gift vouchers and after the 21 days Paypal refunded the buyer on both occasions and ebay banned the buyers, which if I sent the item would have been out of pocket.

I've just noticed something similar on waht I'm selling, but for a smaller amount. They have only paid for standard parcel rate at this late stage for christmas. Would I be best off sending the item at a more trackable rate even if at a slight loss to mysellf?

OK - sent item by special delivery next day as offered. Tracking shows card was left and that package has not been collected. Emailed buyer who says was unable to collect before going away for xmas break last weekend.

Net result payment still on hold. I am now expecting either item will disappear and buyer will try and do charge back or buyer will claim problem with the item and return it as no doubt after christmas they will be able to pick one up much cheaper else where.

My only option seems to be to do the 1p refund trick (does this still work) to at least secure the funds in to my accout although no doubt this will p*ss off the buyer if they are genuine. Not sure what the best way forward is - any suggestions?

The 1p trick still works, I did it on the weekend and I advised someone of it yesterday, who said it worked a treat.
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Go into the transaction that is on hold, go to the bottom, select refund, amend the refund to 0.01 then when it goes through, the funds are automatically unheld. I have done it three times and it has always worked fine and gone through to my bank account fine.

Problem is if you have no available balance you can not do it, but I get my partner to pay me £1 so It works for me.
