Do A&L provide Cheque Books by default?

I have had my Alliance and Leicester account for just coming up to a year. I was in the process of setting up a Tesco Finance savings account when it mentioned needing to send a cheque to make your initial payment. I then realised I don't have my A&L cheque book and I don't remember ever receiving it.

Do A&L send them out by default with a new account or nowadays do you have to request one? I'm wondering if I did receive it, or I lost it got lost in the post or whether it was never provided in the first place.

I've requested a new cheque book online. Its just bugging me whether I did just misplace it. If so will the cheques in the old book (if it ever exsisted) be cancelled?

  • I've recently opened a premier direct current account with them and received a cheque book within a few days.

Me too, I opened up an A&L current account a couple of months ago and received a cheque book. I guess you could check your debit card and if it has a cheque guarantee symbol then you would have been issued with cheques.
  • Check the number of the first cheque when you receive the one that you ordered online. If its number 1, then you can safely assume that you never recevied one before, however, if it starts with something like 26, then this means that its the second book. If this is the case, then I would report it to A&L just in case!

Thanks. I think I will call them tomorrow and ask them to check whether they did send one or not, and if so to cancel the old book.

I have all my A&L documents in one place, and its not there. I've searched everywhere else to no avail.

I think I may have just worked out why I have no cheque book.

When the account was set up, they sent tons of various letters, at the same time I was really busy with out things as well.

I appear to some how have missed a letter where they asked for a copy of my signature. I never replied, so I presume as I never sent back that document they couldn't issue a cheque book as they had no signature to compare to.

I feel quite stupid. I'd better phone them tomorrow, to see if that is the case. I'm not sure if I should just return this document a year late or warn them first.

  • I just opened one and they sent me 2 cheque books. Presumably because it's a joint account.

Ive got a cheque book on my A&L acct, but no guarantee card... so you dont necessarily need to have a guarantee card to get a cheque book.
