Ask for recipts of the goods used. Go striaght to the office of fair trade and to the CAB, Then instuct a solicitor to write a letter informing the builder of these acts. as the saying goes a verbal agreement is not woth the paper it is written on. Calculate how much the goods come to dont forget that the builder adding 5% is quite normal practice. I am a handy man and quote per job also saying that they should put 10-15% away just incase it takes longer or there is some unforseen cost. They will have to charge you the vat on materials but not on top of the vat already paid ie if they brought some wood at £10 including vat they can not charge you £11.75 as they are not retailers.
    Money's too tight to mention!!!
