French TV on Freeview

Anyone else having problems with Freeview in the SouthEast (of the UK) at the moment?
I live about 30 miles from the south coast, and yesterday I started to get a lot of breakup on some channels - particularly Five. Assuming they had just been fiddling with the channel allocations (again) I did a re-tune. It didn't help reception on Five, but it did find nine or ten French channels.
They are all strong enough for the EPG info to be there, so I can see that Canal+ Sports viewers are watching Football Americain, though the signal is too weak to view (fortunately). One - TMC - is strong enough to watch, though with frequent breakup.
Anyone know if there are unusual atmospheric conditions at the moment that would cause this?
If not, this is looking to be a major problem here, as apparently the north of France is going full-power on their own Freeview in 2011, while over here most won't until 2012. Does that mean that we will suffer a year during which French signals will drown out ours???

Quite possibly. The only thing you can do is get an antenna with more elements which makes it more directional and make sure it's pointing at the transmitter you use.0
