Incorrect car repairs - VERY dangerous!

  • Guys, just an update.

I got a call from a regional manager (even though Id sent the letter to head office).

He explained that in 8 year old peugots, it was a common problem that the "fuel rail" would be worn on the inside. He said he checked with the garage and confirmed it was firmly locked in, and that if it popped out, it signalled the rail getting warn thus needing replaced. He told me its a common problem which he'd seen before.

I spoke to some other people who told me that a problem like that, which puts the drivers life at risk, would be worthy of a full recall. I spoke to Peugot who confirmed that the problem does NOT exist and that the rail would never just pop out like that unless incorrectly fitted.

I'm going to get the regional manager to confirm what he said to me on the phone in writing, although not sure what I'd do after! Any ideas?

You know I have lived in the UK for nearly 40 years, I have seen Elephants at Longleat and Colchester Zoo... now just 'cos I have seen them a couple of times does not make them common!!

(sorry that kind of responce from someone trying to cover their !rse makes me mad!!!    )

There were bolts missing... so why?

Has it "popped" out since the AA fixed it?

I suspect not therefore the "rail" is not warn....?

I also suspect that the fact its secured in place with the correctly tensioned fixings means it will not pop out again...

Wait for their responce, in writing, and then put it behind you..

Sorry to say that you as have suffered no loss.. so no legal recourse.. and that the garage does not care so will not do anything to improve staff training.. all I think you can do is to take your business elsewhere in the future.. ?

This could have been so very bad, you have been so very lucky.. so go pick those lottery numbers and let me know how it goes..

  • He said the bolts could have been missing before I took it in and he apologised for not informing me that they weren't there... lol.

He said its impossible to tell if it's worn or not.. He said it was simply a case of if it pops out, then it needs replacing and to take it in right away. (Impossible as the car has been sold now!)

Its not compensation I'm after (although we'd all like some). It's the fact that this garage could have killed me, and could go on to kill others! This is criminal negligence is it not? I'm no expert so only assuming.

Anyway thanks :) I'll prob tell trading standards anyway just so they know about it.

I too have had problems with Nationwide in the past.

All I wanted was to get a new back box exhaust fitted, and to cut a long story short I had to take it back about 5 times before they finally fitted it correctly.

I had to complain to the manager in the branch, then I complained to the Regional manager, who got back to the branch manager, who then sorted it out, finally.

Basically, what I was told was (believe it or not, just the explanation I got), Nationwide are struggling to find fully trained mechanics to employ, they say they have more trainees than actually qualified mechanics doing the work.

Therefore the majority of work is done by trainees, then checked or supervised by the actual mechanics.

I am not saying this is true for all branches, but it definitely was in the Leeds branch that I used.

If you have now sold the car, the evidence is gone. Whilst you may have the AA report, it isn't the smoking gun needed to succeed in a claim as it does not necessarily link NA to the issue.

In any event, it would appear that there is no claim as no loss is suffered.
  • And how about simply ensuring no one elses life is threatened by this incredible garage... lol.

i had a similiar problem with south yorkshire batteries which were recommended to me when my battery died by the RAC. fitted all fine and lovely but when i was driving i noticed that a strange noise was coming when i tried to turn my wipers on. it then started to snow very heavily over the hills and went dark when i realised i couldnt turn my wipers and lights on at the same time!!! had to turn round and go straight back to the garage where they told me it was an electrical fault and to go to my garage and get it fixed by a specialist. i said that there was no problem before they fixed the new battery so could some have happened??? No they said we never fit them wrong. Drive to my wonderful garage who immediately pull up my bonnet and say 'well they havent fitted your battery properly'!!! left half the cable unattached which was the one needed for the lights to work!!! my garage rang south yorks batteries gave em an earful i went back and got the labour cost refunded and will never go back there again!!!
