If you choose the M6 route then I would recommend you continue past the M1 cos as someone said it can be a 'mare.

At end of M6 left slip before joining M1 takes you down underneath and onto the A14 cross country route. A bit bleak but good d/c and will take you across towards Huntingdon where you join the A1 which has fewer problems southbound to London.
The extra distance on the A14 is offset cos it cuts out much of the distance you would have done on the M25 at the other end to reach the A10 into Enfield.

Alternatively, the other suggestion of going south and using the M4 would have been my first thought anyway.
Then you have the choice of M25 around to A10 or you could come in further and take North Circular A406 to Enfield. Both of the latter are liable to be busy on a Sunday.

Thanks for the replies. ViaMichelin does seem better and more flexible.

I'm inclined to take Bargepole's advised route or something like it, it'll be a bit more interesting as I don't know that part of the country. Is the A40, M40 & M25 route much better than the A44 & A41? The latter looks a bit more direct except for being a bit fiddly around Oxford.

As for the trip to Llandudno, I'm actually going there from Blackheath near Greenwich rather than Enfield directly, so I think the best way to the M40 will be through the city to the M4 then up to the M40. Hopefully the traffic won't be too bad through the London around midday on Monday? I'll give the M40 a go as I've not tried that route before, although ViaMichelin recommend the M1..

Definitely follow the advice to go via Welshpool. I've done most of the routes round that area of Wales trying to go south and they're all bloody horrendous. Welshpool to Shrewsbury is a bit twisty but once you get onto the A5 ring road, it's dual carriageway all the way. Can get busy on the M6/M5 split but if you're prepared to spend a couple of quid, the M6 toll avoids that.

A44 to the M50 is a crappy route and then you've got the problem that the M50 is an inbetweeny motorway. You've either got to go back up to the M42 which adds another 30 minutes or down to Bristol and then along the M4 but then you hit the problems from Reading to the M25.
M6, M1 is the best way. It's pretty good now they've nearly finished the roadworks past Luton.

M40 seems to choke around J9 and then you're also hitting the M25 on one of the busiest sections.

A14 way is a hellishly long route to go and you get held up by the container boys going to Felixstowe.

Central London traffic can be a bit of a lottery, basically the route to use is across the river at Vauxhall Bridge, follow the Embankment then up Warwick Road to pick up the A40.

Be very careful, this route skirts round the edge of the Congestion Charge zone, but one slip up and you're across the red boundary, and have to pay for the day.

I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.

Thanks. I'll have a blue badge holding passenger so I can enter the congestion zone for free I believe, I'll try to avoid the hassle of doing so though.
