Mine won't go in the garden, so I have to chase her down the street waiting for her to squat then shove a bowl under her rear end, all the while praying hard that none of the neighbours are watching.:rotfl:Now I need to try and collect a urine sample
My dog isn't typical as she has a congenital deformity of the innards which means she's had regular infections pretty much from the day I had her, so I'm not sure how much use her symptoms will be to you, as it's clearly a very different situation.
It's a bit like us with cystitis -she starts needing to go more often while we're out, I get puddles on the floor at night (this only happens when she's getting ill), and her wee gets very smelly. She's supposed to drink more, but being the contrary animal that she is, she drinks less which makes it worse. I wouldn't say she's in pain, but it's uncomfortable for her and she goes for the sympathy vote with a vengeance - she gets worse quicker than most dogs with urine infections. She eats normally, as I haven't yet found anything that'll put her off her food.
Try not to worry about it, it might be physical, it might be behavioural, you're getting it sorted and the dog will be fine. Honest. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Hi, hope everything goes well on thursday. It might help to start writing questions down for your consultation, as you think of them as the consultation will happen all to quickly and you may forget important questions until you leave. I did this with our dog when he was diagnosed diabetic and found it a great help, also use an old diary and try to put in exact dates of incidents and possible triggers, this will help the vet and you build a picture of what happens when. One piece of excellent advise I was given is measure and write down how much water your dog drinks, easiest way is to fill bowl with 500ml in morning and write down how much you + or - from then. Its not easy but it all helps with th diagnosis and the more prep you can do the quicker you can eliminate things and hopefully keep costs down.0

thanks.
I did start to measure her water last night and I put in 300ml of water at approx 5.30pm and at 11.30pm she still had 100ml left.
This morning that 100ml was still there, I have put another 200ml in and will see what is there when I get back home.
She weighs approx 7kg, so going by simontheicemans reply she should be drinking 420ml a day?
No accidents on the floor overnight but after her walk at 9pm last night I had to let her out the back 3 times to pee

My dog was about same age as yours when she appeared to have got cystitis one evening, peeing more than usual when i took her for a walk,
I went to the chemist(as too late for vets) and got a basic remedy -cant remember what it was but it worked quickly.
My present dog - when she was about 7/8yrs, she would have a leaky bladder when she lay down, not every time. I was up all night on the net panicking about what it might be.
The vets gave some meds- Propalis or similar(under £20), he said it was like hrt for older dogs who've been speyed early. Coz in later years there can be shortage of hormonal balance to work bladder properly. Sometimes you stay on this meds for a while or forever but in my case one bottle cured her.
So dont panic about expensive tests just yet, good luck.0 -
thanks. I hope so. I think I am panicking too soon!
I have worked out that she is drinking just under 250ml of water per day, that does not really seem excessive I suppose. There have been no accidents since Mon night, she is popping out a lot to pee though.
Was out the back this morning in the dark in my Pjs and dressing gown with a tupperware tub to catch her 'flow' this morning just as the next door neighbour opened her bedroom blinds....:o my movement also caught the security light so I was in full view.....the things you will do.
god knows what she thought I was up to.0 -
Let us know how she gets on wont you?0

well back from the vets last night with a 7 day course of antibiotics, vet think could be a slight case of cystitis so that should clear that up. After the 7 day course is ended keep an eye on her and see how she goes, if stays the same then bring her back, next thing would be blood tests. Dip test was fine with no sugar detected, she said her weight was fine, took her temp and that was fine too, she said what she has been drinking is not to excess.
Slight chance it could be behavioural but gave me the antibiotics to rule that out anyway.
Feeling a lot better about it myself and the hard job is getting the tablets into her now. She managed to clamp my thumb in her teeth last night, god it hurt!0 -
Im so glad your fears have been abated

Its always so easy to think the worse and look far ahead but 9/10 times a wee infection is all it is and as you found, even if the vet dont find anything on the dip they will start the anti B's see how it goes before heading down the expensive investigation route
Pop the anti B in a bit of dairylea - slips down a treat. If its the big pink ones - break in half first0 -
yep its the big pinks ones. 1/2 twice a day.
off to buy some Dairylea on my lunchbreak I think! Will run out of fingers if this morning was anything to go by too!
Meant to add also, the vet took 24.00 for the consultation, dip test and antibiotics, so not as bad as I first thought it could be either!0
