Regarding your error message. Could it be a simple case of the column width not being wide enough to show the text? If so, double click the left mouse button to automatically adjust the column width to fit.

Thanks guys.

I did wonder about the width Nile but the cell had been merged with it's neighbour so was plenty big.

I think maybe the problem was as Tony suggests. I did have some of the cells formatted for text at one point before changing my mind and altering the layout of the sheet slightly. I thought I had changed all the relevant formats but I wonder if I missed a cell somewhere.

another way to do it one go is in the box you want the total

=(sum(a1:a25))+(sum(d1:d25))
