    Regarding your error message. Could it be a simple case of the column width not being wide enough to show the text? If so, double click the left mouse button to automatically adjust the column width to fit.:confused:

    Thanks guys. :)

    I did wonder about the width Nile but the cell had been merged with it's neighbour so was plenty big.

    I think maybe the problem was as Tony suggests. I did have some of the cells formatted for text at one point before changing my mind and altering the layout of the sheet slightly. I thought I had changed all the relevant formats but I wonder if I missed a cell somewhere.

    another way to do it one go is in the box you want the total

    enter

    =(sum(a1:a25))+(sum(d1:d25))
    smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;) :cool:
