Barclaycard, CHARGEBACK?

Hi guys
I have a question for you savvy people. I recently booked 5 days of driver training with a local company for my lorry license. I was charged the full amount up front and paid for 5 days @ £200 per day. After the first days training I fell ill and asked for the remainder of my days to be put to one side until I contacted them for a new date.
Since then my circumstances have changed and no longer need the training. I have contacted them this evening asking politely for the remaining 4 days to be credited back to my card.
What can I do if they refuse or become awkward? I used my credit card could I get a Chargeback if needed?

As you want to break the contract with the supplier then it will be the 'goowill' of the supplier if they refund you, and as they have no legal reason to do this then you could not ask your CC company to chargeback either.
Unfortunatly you have purchase something which through no fault of the supplier, you have been unable to complete as yet so they are well within thier rights to say no to any request for a refund. These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!
I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!0 -
But there was no contract and training is charged on a daily basis, I have not received what i have paid for.As you want to break the contract with the supplier then it will be the 'goowill' of the supplier if they refund you, and as they have no legal reason to do this then you could not ask your CC company to chargeback either.

The card company are not responsible for you changing your mind. You have NO right of complaint, except to rely on the goodwill of the training company.
You say there wasn't a contract, yet there will be terms and conditions in which you will have entered into and in which the company operate too. Did you really hand over £1000 with no terms of reference ?
Chargebacks under the CCA are for acts of misrepresentation, non delivery of goods, faullty goods etc. The company, based on the limited info you've provided don't seem to have done any of those.0 -
As said it's only goodwill that will see you get a refund. They've already agreed to rearrange your days for a time that suits you better which I would imagine at that notice wasn't the best thing for them so it does seem they're willing to be helpful. With the country the way it is giving you a refund might be asking too much.
If they say no your best course of action is probably to just take them up on the days and get the licence anyway. You don't need it now, but I presume they're the same as a car licence and with you forever?0 -

Of course there was a contract. You pay money, they provide you with a service - that's a contract.0 -

Very true, you have deemed to have accepted the contract by paying for what you wanted.
A liitle bit like going to a shop, the contact is agreed at the till when you had over your money, just because you don't like / want / need something you have no rights to a refund if there is nothing wrong with the item, so the retails does not have to give you your money back.
Like I said it will be the goodwill of the service provider if they give some or all of your money back. Just ask nicely, it might work. Chargebacks do work, but when the service provider resists it and says you just didn't want the course anyway, you will be re-debited by your CC provider and possibly with interest to pay. These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!
