Gas electricity and water
I don't know whether this has been mentioned before, and as I am new to this bare with me.
Regarding electricity, there are discounts with all companies, SWALEC offering a minimum of 20% to those on low incomes, it is means tested, check with supplier. Ask about Energyplus care.
This also applies to gas, check with supplier.
Welsh water are not offering discounts, but advise a 'capped' meter. From what I can gather if your water bill, after having a meter is installed is lower than your unmetered bill, that's what you pay. If it's higher then you would pay the same as your bill before meter, no excess.
Certain conditions apply to all utilities, but it must be worth checking out with your supplier.

With water companies it isn't quite as you say.
All existing customers with all water companies can have a meter fitted and if it doesn't work out cheaper you can revert back to your previous unmetered tariff within the first 12 months - but you still pay for what you have used in that time you had a meter. i.e. you can't incur, say, £300 charges on a meter and say I will only pay the £200 I would have been required to pay on an unmetered tariff!
The meter stays in place and the new occupant will be charged for a meter.0 -
I'm not sure if I put it right:- for example if your water charges were £400 annually, and then you put a capped meter in after clearing your account. The next bill is £325, obviously you have saved money. If the usage was £485, then as the meter is capped at £400 this is the amount you would pay.
As far as I was aware, it's free to have a water meter put in, but once in cannot be removed. I am awaiting more info on this.0 -

It is free to have a water meter fitted, and as I said it won't be removed even if you elect to change back to an unmetered tariff.
However unless you have found a different system, if your usage(to use your example) was £485 that is what you pay.
Your option is that within 12 months(18 months for some compnies) of having the meter fitted you can revert back to the old unmetered tariff and pay £400 for future bills.(obviously this will increase year on year)
e.g. if your usage in 3 months was calculated at say, £120 you would pay this sum. If you then decide at that point that you wish to revert back to the unmeasured tariff it takes effect from that date.Reversion of unmeasured charges takes effect from the day that the request to revert is received by the Water Company.0
