Is it possible to buy a temporary TV licence for say a month, a friend is coming over on holiday and is staying in her parents house which is empty and has no TV licence, she will be staying a month so wondered if this would be possible
Thanks

It looks like you have to buy a license for a whole year and then apply for a refund of any unused amount. I think they round up to quarters.

You can redeem any unused quarters on a TV license.

I'd choose to pay monthly or quartely by DD, then just cancell DD. In this case you will have much smaller (if any) amount to claim back:
    Pay monthly
You'll pay for your first licence by Direct Debit in equal monthly payments within the first six months.

If you don't already have a licence, or your current licence has less than six months to run, you'll make fewer but larger payments.

After this, you can start paying towards your next licence in 12 monthly instalments of around £11 per month (six payments before it begins and six after). These payments will always add up to the same amount as the annual licence fee.

    Pay quarterly
One payment of £32.89 and three payments of £32.87 will be collected from your bank or building society account every three months. If you choose this option, your licence will be paid for in arrears; because of this, a small premium of £1.25 per quarter is included in your payment.

Please note: this option is not available to customers living in the Channel Islands.

apply for a licence say you will pay for it in the post office once a week with payment card (about 4-5 pounds) at the end of the month stop paying)
    Money's too tight to mention!!!
  • as far as i know they make you pay six months in advance if its a new license.
my advice to your friend - DONT BOTHER! just use the telly and take a risk. you wont be caught and there is no sensible way of paying for just a month. Which is hardly your fault, is it?
OR do without a telly. by far an easier option than it sounds. just chill out, read, do the crossword, listen to the radio. visit friends a watch a little with them if you feel the need...
if i had known then what i know now

You can't do that. That option is only available if you're on income related benefits and they will deduct non-payments from your benefits too!

I agree with the poster above. By the time your friend has even been sent a reminder, they will be long gone.

I held out in my 2nd rented house for 5 months before I bought a licence, then cancelled shortly after the second payment went through as I only needed it for a 6 month period after I got the licence.

All first-time licences have to be paid for over 6 months, then you have to start paying the following year's licence at the end of the 6 months. That way they've always got you paying 6 months in advance.

    Hi,

I have temporarily removed some posts from this thread and referred them to the Forum team who will decide whether or not to reinstate them, as they seem to fall into a legal 'grey area'.
