Vietnamese Dong

Hi there
im hoping that someone will be able to shed some light on this for me. Im heading to Vietnam in jan on honeymoon and have read somewhere that i cant purchase Dong in this country. Does anyone know if thats right? If so, then would it be preferable to take us dollars and then just withdraw doing from an atm when we get there

I've always thought "Dong" was a name for the male sexual organ, but google confirms it's also the official Vietnamese currency

And to make it worse, if you have a reasonable budget you will be packing a million dong!

Seriously, I withdrew most of what I needed from an ATM in the airport at HCMC (Saigon). Other ATMs were easy to find and worked. There is a small charge for each withdrawal, so take out plenty each time.

I am sure that the money-changers can cope with sterling bank notes, so I would not bother getting dollars -- you'll still need to change them before you can spend them.
