  • To be honest most modern cars are ultra reliable than what we were used to 10 years ago. But the japs do have the edge on reliability my last patrol had 350,000 miles on the clock and it still ran perfect. My new one is also heading for starship mileages and once again faultless.

At 130,000 your car is hardly run in but on saying that you have a fair amount of bills, by 130,000 miles my last patrol had zero repairs just tyres and a set of pads.

But i think we are all agreed once a car gets to that age take it out the main dealer network and find a good independent.

If you look at the bills again, you'll see that most of the cost is brakes and tyres - there's only two of them that are actually 'repairs', and only one of those, the water pump that can't be put down to general wear and tear.
  • Yes i did notice that but you do seem to have a lot of brake related expenses. Are you heavy on the brakes i normally get about 80,000 out my pads at the rear and slightly less from the front.
  • ohh and disks are good for at least 150,000 or more.

Around 30K for the pads, and 60K for the discs. Not unusual for a BMW. Tyres are another big expense with the rears only lasting 18K. If you do a lot of miles it's not really an MSE car!

As Shimrod said, the expense on the Beemers tends to be the tyres. I had a 06 plate and got through 3 sets of tyres over the 65k miles i had it for as company car. The tyres were run flats (as standard due to BM not using space saver wheels in the 3 series), and were £250 a corner.

The plus side i have found is the predictive servicing. Drive the car well (and or on motorways)and the service internal increased to about 24k miles, rather than the 10k with some other diesels.

Like a few others have said, use a BM specialist to get the best price.

Regardless of what the oil service indicator says I would change the oil after 12 - 15k miles.
Also go for non run flat tyres and add a spare to the boot.

Buy a used 320d on an 04 plate or newer. There were injector problems before the 04 plate. Also, swirl flaps on all BMW desiels can be a problem, they break off and are sucked into the engine causing usually complete destruction.

Other than that they are good cars with plenty of power, refinement etc..
Never buy a stupid dwarf -
Its not big and its not clever.

Why say go without run flat tyres and add a spare in the boot?

They are designed for RFT and the rims are specially made for them. Not to mention they could save your life.
