My computer is making a different sound this morning. Starts half way through boot-up while XP is loading. Stops a little while after boot-up complete. Done this twice. Is this anything to worry about? First I thought it was the hard disk, but it's not there all the time. Then wondered about fan?
It's quite a loud humming noise.

Do you have a CD in the drive? They can hum sometimes.0 -
Yes I did! Hopefully that will solve it.0

Assuming its a mechanical noise then there are 3 possibilities System/power supply fan (ie the one on the back), CPU fan (the little one inside on the mother board) or hard disk.
Provided they are still going round then the first two aren't too much of a worry but any noises form the hard disk are bad news - sooner or later it wil die - backup now
Take the side off - there are no high voltages outside the power supply box and try and tell where the noise is coming fromTANSTAAFL !0 -
Yes a bent (ie not perfectly flat cd) can also cause a humTANSTAAFL !0
