Cheap Train Travel

I'm new to the board so please go easy on me.

I have to commute daily from Glasgow to Edinburgh.

The bus is very cheap but takes a compeletely random amount of time to get between the cities (often an unacceptable 90 minutes).

The train is very expensive and routinely ten minutes late if we aren't being held up by points failures.

So has anyone got any tips on a cheap way of getting between these two bastions of Scottish Culture?

NB: I bought a Ten journey ticket over the festive period because I knew I wouldn't be travelling every day.

I discovered that, starting your journey in Glasgow, the ticket isn't swallowed by the automatic barriers in Edinburgh. Which means if you were dishonest, you could use it again for the return journey (where it is swallowed on arrival in Glasgow)

The conductors write a time on it when/if they inspect it but in my expereinece, you hardly ever get checked in both directions and even if you did, you still have one of your other valid tickets to present.

It's a pity doing this would be wrong because you'd get two weeks worth of travel for 77-90 (as opposed to about 63 quid for the weekly ticket).
