Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Do you mean for you to give to a tenant, or for you as a tenant?
    Gone ... or have I?

I am the tenant, I am lodging in one room with shared rest of the house.

Does the land lord also need a rent book or other means to record my payments to him/her.

If you are the tenant, then the landlord should supply the rent book and tenancy agreement. The landlord should also have a copy of the rent book for his/her records.
My landlord lives quite a way from me so only comes round once every 6 months to renew tenancy agreement and update rent book. If you wanted to claim housing benefit at anytime you would have to show them a rent book.
    Hope that helps
