Student Jobs

Options
Hey all,

Feeling the money blues this Xmas...I'm a student in 3rd year for Russian and Spanish, and I am finding it really hard to get a part time job. I know it's very competitive and all but I needed work so badly this Xmas to pay for the term abroad in summer :(

Just don't know what to do. My mum suggested I might be over-qualified for the types of jobs I'm going for - is it bad to 'dumb down' your CV, as it were? I'm so desperate, I want a grand for the term (yes, should have tried to save last year, but was in Russia)

I know I'm a good employee, because I've always been asked back to some places, it just seems really tough this Xmas.

:mad::mad::mad:

Any people with great student jobs? Ones that I'll actually get?

I worked at my local football club 4 years before uni. I came back and I am working there this xmas.

I worked at Dominos for a year and a half before uni and I've been asked to go back.

I doubt you're 'over qualified' for the jobs as such, its not like you're 30 with 10 years of work experience going for a job in mcdonalds.

Its a little late to still be looking for xmas jobs. Wait until Jan when you go back to uni and look for partime jobs then, asda, tesco etc.

I got a job at Tesco in my third year - steady job and decent wage and safe to say the hiring policy in our store wasn't all that stringent...

Unfortunately at this time most places will have already recruited for xmas, although with everyone disappearing home you might get lucky if you live in a studenty place! Best thing to do is send out your CV to all the shops/bars you can think of - send a cover letter explaining your situation and you shouldn't need to dumb down your qualifications. Good luck!

It's really the wrong time of year since most places will already have recruited their Christmas employees.

    Usual student places are:
    Local bars/clubs
    Cinemas/theatres
    Supermarkets
    Retail
    McDonalds/other food place
    Call centres
    Cleaning

Have you thought about waiting on in a pub/restaurant? They are busy places this time of year and you may be lucky.

What jobs are you trying to get? What skills and experience do you have? Are you just waiting for jobs to be advertised or are you getting yourself out there? Are you getting interviews but no job or not even a foot in the door?

Last time I was job hunting I sent out 30 CVs and covering letter to suitable employers in the area, rang them all to chase it up and came to visit for interviews and to chase up in person. As a result I had the job I wanted before I moved here - and this is an area of high unemployment. It can be done, chin up.

Have you tried more 'intellectual' shops? Like waterstones, john lewis, books etc, jewellers, holland and barrett, etc? Pretty much all the part timers at waterstones where my bf is an xmas temp are students doing various things. Whilst I was at uni I actually worked at a dry cleaners for a while too! Just doing ironing/sorting, not the actual dry cleaning. That was good.

Have you tried advertising yourself for conversation lessons for foreign students? That can be quite lucrative, I hear.

I found last xmas that I lost out on several jobs because bars/pubs/restaurants want people that will work xmas eve/xmas day/NY eve/NY day because their regular staff want time off. If you're prepared to work those 4 days then you can earn big bucks as most places will pay you double time or time and a half plus you can get great tips if you're friendly and do your job well.

Christmas day and NY especially, you can find upto 5x pay at some places

  • Have you considered babysitting?

Lots of people like to socialise at this time of year. My daughter is home from Uni for Christmas and is earning good money doing just this.

    Good luck and Happy Christmas.
  • Have you signed up with any agencies? Some places will recruit warehouse etc. staff at short notice, when they need to get things shipped out at this time of year. Or you thought about sales work? In lots of places you can near enough walk into telesales type work in double glazing and so forth (admittedly cause most don't want to do it, stressful and high staff turnover).

Obviously, be careful not to get taken advantage of - you shouldn't have to pay out to find or start holiday work, and if you don't have a basic wage there should be v good, achievable commission. Especially leaving things this late, though, you'd do very well if you managed to make a grand in the next month...
