Tyres - it pays to shop around

Christmas isn't a great time to have to splash out on two new tyres for my wife's car (Yokohama GO35) so I was keen to get the best price possible. My local suppliers quoted me anything from £115 to £140 each. Online from companies like Blackcircles I could get it down to £110 using discount vouchers / Quidco etc. However, I was stunned when I rang Micheldever Tyres (near the A303/M3 junction in Hampshire) and got a pair fully fitted for £164. Result! I hadn't expected a retail outlet to be cheaper than an online vendor so I was very pleasantly surpised and thankful that I took the trouble to shop around. I have used Micheldever for bike tyres but never gave them a second thought in the past for cars - probably because I rarely drive.

Heh-heh. Couldn't agree more. My local tyre shop offered to do the same ones as I could get on mytyres for £2 a tyre fitted cheaper than mytyres could supply. And that was without any prompting whatsoever. It would appear that there's some heavy discounting going on if you steer clear of the national chains.

I never saw Mytres before, but they don't list the GO35 so it's academic anyway. Bookmarked for future use though...

I know Kwik Fit is normally known for rip-offs and incompetence but one centre near us is really good, provided the centre manager I know is in. I got 2 tyres fully fitted for just £75 (Dunlop SP30), nobody else (internet or local) could match that.

Having said that their 'standard' price was something over £100 so it pays to ask for a competitive price.

Micheldever / Protyre are usually very good on price and service.

As another idea, get the best price you can then call the main dealer and check with them. Normally the first quote is a bit silly but wth some prompting mine has come up trumps.

I agree. My Mazda dealer has, today, come within £5 of the web price for Bridgestone RE040's. Worth the extra for me as they are 2 minutes from where I work.

We do a price beater for any supplier within 5/6miles on tyres, so even our local tyre specialists (and there's about 10 that I can think of) can be beaten...even if we lose money :o
