Don't suppose anyone has ever heard of one that doesn't require a chest band?
Hi, You can get them without chest bands. The ones I have seen involve you placing your thumb on your watch or attaching a sensor to your ear. However they are not very accurate and you would be better off just taking your pulse manually.
I use a Polar pulse meter witha chest band and love it.

Polar now sell HRMs with the 'Wearlink' strap, which, although it's still a chest strap, only has a small plastic piece. It's much more comfortable than the usual type.
My recommendation for buying a HRM is

I have received fantastic service from them (and I don't have any affiliation). They have detailed information on all types of HRM.0 -
Thanks for the info. The ones that don't allow continuous monitoring aren't really any good as you may as well just take your pulse manually.
I would get a HRM with strap if I went to the gym a lot but my main exercise comes in the form of 5-a-side footy, swimming, casual walking. If the monitor was just a watch I'd put it on for all of these, but not a watch and a strap. For swimming it would look silly - for footy it wouldn't really be any help and for walking it would certainly be interesting to see how it varied, but who's going to want to put a special strap on just for a quick walk to the shops?
Definitely a good idea for gym goers, but I think I'll have to wait for technology to catch up with my requirements :-(0 -

I have an Oregon Scientific one that I got for Christmas that "talks" to the gym equipment with no problem, so I guess they use a standard protocol. In fact it works a bit too well - the guy next to me yesterday was trying to figure out why his pulse was already so high when he'd only just got on the machine :rotfl:0 -
MOnitors cross talk as they all use the same frequency to transmit in gyms HOWEVER you can get coded kit which can selct different codes to stop this cross equipment interference but of course you pay more !!!
I have an oregon which is great, also vibrates when under or over limit - especially useful in a noisy or running along roads when you can't hear the things beep
All the best

(PS if Aldi's is same as last year - found it very awkward to use and set up in practical use)0 -
