Rightmove. Dec 2008. Asking prices down

Asking prices for homes in Britain fell in December to stand more than 10 percent below May's peak, a survey showed on Monday.

Property website Rightmove said asking prices fell an unadjusted 2.3 percent this month to 217,808 pounds ($324,000), after November's 2.9 percent fall.
The annual rate improved slightly to show prices down 6.3 percent in December, compared with 7.1 percent in November.

"Initial asking prices are now an average of 10.2 percent below the peak they hit in May of this year," Rightmove said in a statement, predicting asking prices could bottom out a further 10 percent down by the end of 2009.

Britain's housing market has taken a battering this year as the credit crunch squeezed bank lending and spread through the broader economy.

Every index has its own peak.

It would seem RM are saying theirs was May this year. *shrugs* who knows the truth. Is there any truth anywhere?

Is it possible that Rightmove are talking purely about asking price whereas other commentators are discussing selling price? In which case I could definitely see that a peak was possible as late as May. Sellers took a long time to realise what was happening and very few reduced price during the first months of the year.

    Zelie wins today's special prize!

RM look at asking prices and then only on properties listed on RM. They claim that is 90% of the market.
