If I go in with cash, how much can I hope to get a 8k car from a main dealer for?

Of course haggle. The size of discount is a very variable thing and immposible to quantify. I'd certainly be looking for some movement from the salesperson, the amount...perhaps someone who has purchases recently could pass comment.
    Good luck :)

If you are not trading in you can easily expect 500 off, but you should push for imo more like 750. A full tank of petrol, and make sure all tyres have a good tread....if some are less than 2mm then ask for new ones including the spare.

You could also push them to service it if it has not been recently done, and you can check the air filter yourself and if it looks dirty ask for a new one.

A cheque would be good enough, or a debit card, no need to risk walking around with cash.
  • If you bought the same car from a private person you would probable save at least £1500 so it's worth trying for all you can get see Parkers price guide to see the difference between what your dealer paid for the car and what he is charging you.

I've bought the my daughters last 3 cars. one was stolen and when she claimed she got more than I paid from the insurance, one was written off in an accident and again the insurance value was higher than the price I paid. Hopefully she won't have similar problems with her current car. But depreciation is only for those who buy at dealers price and sell at trade price. You really need to reverse that by trying to buy nearer the trade price.

  • It will depend on how desireable the car is, how long the dealer has had it in stock and (possibly) the time of year. You'll get less off a metallic BMW 3 series than you will off a hearing-aid Beige Mondeo. You'll get more off a cabriolet in winter than you will when the sun starts to shine.

Your problem is that you want to pay cash, so you won't be a particularly attractive customer to the dealers. They make more money from finance deals than they do by selling cars, so they would much rather flog it to somebody who will take out a loan with them, so you might struggle to get a big discount.

erm not much, exactly the same discount as someone buying on credit, or paying with chq/draft

but i dont know of many dealers that would accept cash in that quantity anyway - too risky to hold in the building, and also probs with money laundering/counterfits

i agree with the above. if the dealer will not lower the price then get some freebies such as full tank and/or car mats, 12 mths tax etc. as said before depends which model it is and at what time of year. they are eager to get rid of stock when the new registration comes out or in this month when the market slowly picks up since the buyers had spent a lot for xmas pressies etc
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

I have found that the best way to get good deals from car dealers is to play hardball, just like they do. Play them off against each other. Find 2 or 3 examples of the model you want and let them try and beat each other on price and extras. When they start to say that you should go for the other place's deal you know you've got there.

We played 4 Citroen dealers off against each other for a C2 in the summer. In the end we saved over £1000 on the original deal at the first one. Thoroughly enjoyed it too!
