Sicily in Feb/Mar

Have any of you been to sicily before, I am looking at various options for a holiday in Feb/Mar, and was thinking of the canaries, but read an article in the Times at the weekend raving about Sicily, what is it like Feb/Mar warm enough? Can you travel and stay reasonably cheap.

If not this time of the year, we may go instead in May/June to Sicily/and or southern Italy. The we are the OH and a babe(6 months)

  • Hi,

I used to live in Sicily and spent Feb to June there in a small town west of Palermo. I can thoroughly recommend it for a late winter, early spring break. The weather in mid-March onwards until about June is perfect, then it gets too hot.

For ease, I would say fly to Palermo with Ryanair and then venture 30 mins west to places like Terasini, Balestrate and Castellemare. They will be very off-season and it should be cheap to stay somewhere at this time. They are charming places, will be very quiet and relaxed, and are excellent as bases from which to explore nearby countryside and towns like Erice and Trapani.

The people are kind and the food is wonderful. You don't need to go to the East coast where most tourists go - start with this North West corner (it's so very close to the airport) to get an authentic taste of Sicily, and then go further if you like it and have the time.

    Scicily is Fab.
We (2 families with 3 kids 8-10) rented a small villa from a company we found on the net called "Meditteranian villas". When we left Mr Curto, who is their main man on the island, recommended contacting him directly in future for a better rate.

We went in May. Excellant accomodation, the owners could not do enough for us. Fantastic people, great beaches, very scenic. We were a little remote in that it was a car journey to the better beaches and the shops etc but it was a truly great get away holiday.
The beaches were empty when we went in the week but at the weekends the sicilians flock to them and the roads were packed.

    Ryan air to palermo.
Hire of a car is a must to get the most out of the island.
We stayed between Castelemere de golfo and scoppello and will be going back.
I save so I can spend.

Spent a few days one Feb in Agrigento, on South Coast. Loved it but it was very very empty - most places had shut for the winter. Climate was nice - sunny but not hot. Chilly in the evenings.
