How about instead of putting the ring in the box put a photo of your xmas tree and tie the ring to the star on the top and when she goes to the tree to get "what ever it is" get down on one knee by the tree and ask her to be your wife. That way christmas trees will always be very special to you both for always x x

    good luck

Just say really lovely things. They'll mean more to her than anything. Think about heartfelt and lovely things you can say to her.

I'm sure you would do this anyway, but make sure you also tell her why you want her to marry you. I like the idea of having one of the boxes (probably the first) of something a bit naff.

    Hi Wendy and all....

    Went really well thank you....

We had already purchased a laptop a few months ago between us as our present for each other for Christmas. So our budget was £20 and we each got the other a few little bits which we opened early Christmas morning.

Then I told OH to jump in shower so we could set off as we were visiting parents. As she walked out of the lounge door she found a large box all wrapped up with a big bow on at the bottom of the stairs "oh yeah, forgot about that one" I said with a smile as she walks back in with it looking excited / confused...

She tears off the paper and opens the first box, removes shredded tissue paper and finds an A4 sheet with 9 photos of us both from the 9 years we have been together. That sheet was sellotaped to another box which she opens and finds more shredded tissue paper, more photos and another box.

She opens the second box and finds more photos and a small box underneath. In that box she finds the ring (just a temporary £5 next ring until we can choose a real one) and rolled up in the ring a note saying "Marry me?"

She jumps up out of the chair and dives on me looking like the most excited person in the world and won't let go of me for about 10 minutes (at which point she was in tears  ). I was planning to get down on one knee but didn't have chance when she grabbed me.

Once the tears stopped I said "Is that a yes then?" and she confirmed it was. :D

What a Christmas.... now to find the real ring and start planning....

Thank you so much all for the help and support.
