£3 Southern Trains!

Southern trains have extra cheap tickets (usually £3 one way) for London to Brighton and vice versa. They may include other destinations but I've never tried. Thing is, you can't buy these off Southern's website. You can either:

1) Go to a participating Southern trains railway station and buy the tickets. You have to ask for the 'advanced' fare.

2) Buy them from raileasy.co.uk (make sure you choose London Victoria) although they charge you unfairly, £2 per ticket extra! But it's useful if you can't get to a station.

What I tend to do is check on raileasy.co.uk and make a note of the times. Then I go to the station and ask for those specific trains and make sure it's the advance tickets. A couple of things to note:

- They are non refundable
- The give you two paper tickets per journey so don't throw anything away
- They don't work in the turnstiles so you have to show the inspector at the
gate to let you through.
- They must be purchased by 6PM the night before

There is a way to buy them online without paying raileasy's fees

Go to the National Rail website and put your journey in. Select the cheap fare and click through to the National Express East Coast site where you can buy them.

You won't find them looking direct on the NATEX site for some reason.

Also works with FGW - haven't tried any others.

Other destinations in the £3 fares include most stations West of Brighton too for example, Worthing, Chichester, Havant, Portsmouth, Fareham etc.

Certain Railcards reduce the fare to £2, Senior, Young Persons they quote YP card on their site but discount doesn't show on national Rail site, Family, Disabled and HM Forces Railcards only.

Also you should specify London VICTORIA as opposed to London, when searching, especially to/from Portsmouth where you would normally be routed to Waterloo, slightly quicker but at £25 a lot more expensive
