Slow on start up help!

My computer is so slow everytime i start it up. It takes ages before i can get online, i think it is loading so many programs on start up and causing it to go slowwwww.
Ive got microsoft xp home.
Anyone know how i find what is loading up on start up and how to stop it?

I only know of only one, now unsupported app to help you find out - Bootvis

To be honest my PC was slow during boot up and for the effort I'd put in to try and determine what it was I eventually gave up and wiped it using the supplied recovery disks. I then found out it was ZoneAlarm adding a good 40 seconds to the log on time.

If I were you I'd uninstall all programs you don't use anymore, run CCleaner, have a look at msconfig and finally run a defrag.

If it's still slow then run an anti-virus check (I use Avira AntiVir), run a spyware check (I use SuperAntiSpyware) and run a Malware check (I use Malwarebytes).

If after all that it's still slow or you don't fancy doing all the above, back up all data to DVD / CD / External HDD then do something like the following:

1. Insert recovery disks and completely wipe your computer
2. Uninstall any pre-loaded programs and windows components you don't need
3. Update manufacturer’s drivers
4. Run a windows update
5. Install firefox + adblock
6. Install anti-virus and any other applications
7. Run another windows update
8. Restore your data

Post the log here AFTER youve deleted anything it finds

Download and run startup lite

(removes some useless startup items)

Download HIJACK THIS

SCAN and post the log here so we can see what your computers doing

To reduce the start up items, click on start then run. then type in the box msconfig and press ok. In the start up tab, there are several boxes ticked on the left hand side. Simply uncheck those which don't need to start up, eg, anything to do with your printer, itunes, music players etc, messenger etc. when you're done, press ok and reboot. On reboot, you'll get a message, tick the box and press ok.
