I asked a question about radiators a while ago here and from the answer I received I would say that a radiator cover will not convect heat any better.

I think Jali is a well known make, either of the cover or the fancy board, but don't know about cost. If you think about it some of the heat from your radiator is lost heating up the actual cover and you have to decide if it's more important to have a nice looking, fashionable radiator cover but possibly lose some heat or stick with a plain radiator and benefit from a bit more heat for your money.

Talked about these to a friend recently i.e. how they had come down in price over the years, available in B&Q etc and she said: Her son had recently had his (came with house) removed as (a) they took up space and (b) house was warmer without them. While attractive, they seem to make it harder for heat to circulate. I believe warmest option is bare radiators with some form of foil behind them to 'push' heat back into rooms away from walls. Sorry, not very scientific but hope it helps.
  • ambiant temp is the temp of the whole room , touch a wall and you feel the ambiant temp , radiator covers do reflect heat back so will slow a room warming but having them enables heat to last in a room longer , a bigger surface area cools slower than a smaller hence heat up a large chunk of wood ( or mdf ) as well as a radiator then it will take longer for the heat to be lost

also its nice to stick pot purri on un to make rooms smell nice

  • I just bought an oak veneer one from my local B&Q in the Clearance section. It was £20 for a medium one or £10 for a small. They had piles of them so i assume its end of the line stuff :)

I confess to have never understood the fascination some people have with radiator covers. I guess they can look nicer than a radiator but given we pay extortionate prices for energy these days it seems odd to me that people want to block its flow path from heating the space for which the radiator was intended. All very odd
