can I install my windows xp which is an OEM on a friends pc which has crashed big time,,I have serial number etc

thats right , a fresh install is not possible , but repair is

If you cannot boot to the Desktop, or you have an OEM version of XP, or you want to remove a service pack then the following should be used to complete a Repair Install
