iPod Problem - but why and what exactly was the problem??

I've got a iPod Classic 80GB last Christmas. Yesterday afternoon I left it charging on my docking station. It was working when I took it off last night. This morning I was not able to switch it on or charge it, I got no response at all to attaching it to the charger or to the docking station. When I plug it into my computer I got the message
"Your iPod needs to be reformatted for use with Windows. Would you like to run iTunes to restore your iPod now?"
I clicked OK, and iTunes loaded but my iPod was not listed on the left hand side, so it didn't give me the option to reformat.
I found the following link http://ipod.about.com/od/troubleshootingyouripod/ht/reset_ipod_vid.htm and followed the instructions of holding down the MENU and the centre button and it finally switched on. :T It is showing only half a battery, which would suggest it didn't charge last night.
I've reconnected it to my computer and it now shows on the left hand side. However when I try to eject it came up with the message "The iPod "xxxxx" cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application" I'm not sure how this can be. I had to go to Safely Remove Hardware instead which worked. :T
Would anyone know why all this has happened??
Knowing that I was given it last Christmas, should I try and take it back before the year is up?? (though I don't know when my dad actually purchased it - I will know this afternoon hopefully we will be short of the 12 months) even though it appears to be working fine now.
Any and all help would be most appreciated!!! TIA
