Taj Hotel - Mumbai

OK some family members of mine are travelling to India later in Dec and they are booked to stay here... from what they say it seems to be the hotel that was bombed etc....

What I want to know is... is it even still open?! I mean... the damage looked pretty bad surely they will close for refurb? Are my family crazy for not changing to a different hotel?

This article (http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE4BC18Z20081213) says it's due to reopen on 21 Dec.. what if it's delayed? my family go on the 22nd or 23rd I think.

  • If there's a time to go to India then it's now as security will be high..

I went there last year on Business and stayed at the Taj Hotel and it's probably the safest hotel in Mumbai.. And Cleanest...

Would I go back again ? Not If I can help it..

It was the Taj Mahal Palace and the Oberoi that were amongst the scenes of bombings and shootings. I have little doubt that they will be open for business as soon as possible but I don't have clue what the Taj is going to do about their restaurant as so many people were killed there. Added to that, a good 50% of the hotel was seriously fire damaged.

Please bear in mind that the Taj chain have 4 hotels in Mumbai and it was the Taj Mahal Palace that was hit.

Hotels do recover and reopen and life does go on, but it is very soon to seriously think about how to proceed.
I would email the hotel and ask them for advice incase they are considering or in the position of outbooking some of their existing reservations.

I would contact the hotel to see what the current position is

Thats sad at this present time.
  • Really sad and not funny people lost loved ones.
  • Have you checked with whoever you/they booked through? The tour operator will be in touch with the hotel and will have information. If the hotel cannot accommodate them, the tour operator will have to change them to an alternative hotel of equal rating.

Thanks Diamond, my family are... older and quite set in their ways. If they do have to change hotels (even of equal rating), nothing will be as good as the Taj Mahal palace!
