Windows Vista - Releasing soon?

Options
Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone knew when Windows Vista will be released in the UK and become standard on new PC's/Laptops?

I understand it is suited for 64 bit processors so will it just be standard on those or all PCs/laptops?? I need to replace my desktop in the next 6 months but would like to wait till the next OS is released.

Cheers,

The latest date I've heard for the release of Vista is 7th Dec 2006. This is not set in stone though. They have already pushed back the dates a few times.

It would be an idea not to rush out and buy it straight away. Microsoft have a history of releasing products, then finding major flaws with them after they have released them. I seem to remember XP was released as a completely secure OS, then 3 months or so later they had to release service pack 1 to patch all the flaws that were found. I would give them at least 6 months after release, so they have got enough time to discover and patch the first batch faults that are bound to be discovered.

From what I have heard, Windows Vista is coming out towards the end of this year. It isn't likely that it will only work on 64-bit processors because the majority of people don't have these. Hopefully it will work on 32-bit processors as well...

Dont worry about Vista just yet as the release date is apparently a secret
so no-one knows, and dont rush out and get it unless you want to have a nightmare OS before all the fixes and security holes are fixed..

Dont do Microsofts work for them by sending error reports every 2mins
unless you have an hourly rate already agreed with them...lol

I think the XP will be the best OS that MS will have released in a long long time
and when Vista is released that will be the hackers next target so pressure
    will be off XP...

Wanna keep up with the Jones's then get Asta la Vista baby.....

If XP runs on all types of PCs then stick with that.

There is already a 64 bit version of Win XP Professional out there.

And thats it in a nutshell, not much point in Vista as I see it....

MS are in the business of making money so a new OS is the only way.

trouble is, a few years on (and not very many), they stop maintaining and supporting old products* ........ but I agree, no rush yet

    * as I now see, intel has remarked in a separate thread

Wait until SP1 for Vista is out.

There should be a few improvements/additions, although you should be able to carry on with XP regardless.

    - Better memory management
    - Additional diagnostics (network, hard disk, memory etc...)
    - Greater user restrictions (much like Linux where you have to confirm you're an admin before doing anything)
    - Improved firewall, will do outbound. This will be interesting to see if it's any good.
    - Lock down of services, so they can't perform operations that they shouldn't be.

Basically nothing revolutionary, but the next step of OS. Although it will probably mark the official switch to 64-bit os's and software. It is available now, but not fully supported. Like anything in technology it'll keep on evolving and progressing.

  • The recommended specs are astonishlingly high! Minimum 512MB Graphics Card, 1024MB RAM, 2.4GHz!

However, this means a price drop on the lower end components which will run absolutely GREAT in current XP systems!

I don't think VISTA is going to be much better than XP is it really?!
  • Vista is said to have translucent menu bars and windows!!!

I can hardly contain myself, I mean, we're talking TRANSLUCENT here!! :D:D:D:D:D
