    on the main current accounts....yes.

On a Route 21, Student & Graduate Royalties accounts, it's a fixed £10 charge for going over your limit.

I have an Abbey student account and when I was taken overdrawn (by less than £10, and entirely through their own mistake so I was later refunded) they charged me £60, which is £35 + £25. It is extortionately high in comparison with other banks. My friend has a natwest student bank account and doesn't get charged at all for going over, unless a SO or DD is bounced.

A few years ago I did go overdrawn on the Abbey account and if I remember rightly, they did refund it because it was the first and only time it happened. Hopefully they're still as forgiving now!
  • The charge is £30. Cant see why you think the tariffs are confusing. The unauthorised overdraft charge is £25. The transaction amount was £6 which falls between the £0 - £9.99 category and charge is thus £5 as per tariff!

Previous to these changes she would have been charged £25 for going overdrawn and £30 for the £6 transaction.

So instead of being charged £55 she has been charged £30, a saving of £25!

As for the charges, Halifax charge you £28 a month for using an unauthorised overdraft. Lloyds TSB don't charge you for your first usage of it, then after that the cost is £15. RBS charges £28. Barclays have a reserve system which charges £22. So it does appear to be expensive on the face of it. Yet another reason not to bank with Abbey, you know what service. But the old addage, they are only doing their job and it is not their fault she went over drawn. But they are expensive compared to the others on the face of it.
Eh??? Abbey's £25 a month is less than Halifax or RBS. If it's the first offence then a polite word to the branch will probably get it waived anyway.
