Trying to type up some recipes in double quick timing.
How do I get the symbol for degrees as in 200 degrees C?
I'm in a big rush so hoping someone can save me faffing around looking for it for half an hour!

Position your cursor in the Word document.
Click START....All Programs....Accessories....Character Map.
Choose Arial Font.
Click on the degree character (6 down, 11 across), click SELECT.0 -

I've selected it, how do I get it into my Word doc? Sorry to be thick!0 -
Don't know what Wombat's on about but you can do this:
Type 200 followed by
Alt + 0186 (use the numeric keypad on the right)
Type C
Hope that helps. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Using the mouse, select the symbol, then click on Select and Copy in turn. That copies the symbol to the clipboard, so you can simply paste it into your Word document.purplepatch wrote:how do I get it into my Word doc?
Alternatively, go straight back to Word, hold the [Alt] key and type '0176' on the NumPad. Release the [Alt] key and the degree (°) symbol will appear.0 -
I know a few of these alt + number to get characters in word. Other people have told me and I've made a note, but how do you get to learn them in the first place?0

LOL! Sorry - I haven't used that often. I forgot you had to copy it to the clipboard and then paste it into the document. I thought by clicking on the SELECT option it automatically pasted the symbol in the cursor position.
If it hadn't been an urgent request I would have done more research before replying. I shall now go to write out 100 times "I must not give hasty answers to questions on MSE"!

If you open Word and do Insert, Symbol you should get a window of symbols.
If you then select one of these by clicking on it, it tells you the Alt + xxxx at the bottom of the window.
You can also press the Short cut button to assign a key for a particular character that you may use frequently.

Not at all - a minute after I queried your response, I managed to suss it out myself from the point you got me to, as there was also an option to copy.
So your reply helped me immensely.
Thanks everyone - the job is done now
