Skype Video but with only W2K - Help!

Hi everyone - Happy new year!
I've downloaded the BETA version of Skype after being told it works with Windows 2000 as the brand new version only works with Win XP - damn.
I cannot get my webcam to work with this version Skype. The website advises me to download the lastest version but I know that will not work on my steam powered PC. By the way I've only got a 56k modem
Has anyone else tried this route but have got their webcam to actually work with Skype?
I'll give the Yahoo service a go but I've heard the Skype service is much better but I'm not willing to spend megabucks on a new PC or OS system.
Any advice is gratefully received.
