I use a Laptop & for extra storgage I'm thinking about buying the Western Digital 40Gb USB 2.0 Passport Portable External Hard Drive (Powered through USB).If my main Hard Disk fails for some reason can I use this external Hard Disk to run the OS,Win 'XP??

You can but you would have to set the BIOS to boot from USB.
